Antique Blue and White Transferware Ceramic Pitcher c. 1850
Antique Blue and White Transferware Ceramic Pitcher c. 1850
Large English ceramic pitcher, circa 1850. The paneled body has a spout in the form of a bearded man and the piece is decorated with an all-over transfer pattern in a squiggly vermicelli or seaweed pattern in blue and white. This piece was likely used in conjunction with a matching basin for bathing.
Measures just under 11 inches high to top of handle, 6 1/4 inches diameter of mouth, 10 1/4 inches across handle and spout. Small painted mark (maybe a Q, or a 6?), but nothing to identify a maker.
Overall condition is good with no chips, cracks or repairs; minimal crazing throughout. There is an open bubble in the rim of the underside, probably an inclusion that popped through (see detail image). Some bubbles and dark inclusions in the glaze on the handle. Dirt on the interior.
