Vintage Peacock Chenille Bedspread - Pink Purple Green on White Cotton, 1940s
This peacock chenille bedspread has a green and multicolor bird on a white ground cloth with a floral border in triangular frames. Straight edges, no fringe. All cotton.
These decorative tufted bedspreads were extremely popular during the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. Made mainly in Georgia and other Southern states, chenille spreads shifted from home-based craft to more industrial production after World War II. Chenilles were marketed as rooted in American handiwork and appropriate for both traditional interiors and with more modern styles.
This spread measures approximately 92 x 104 inches. Works best on a full size bed, but still fits nicely on a queen. 1940s or '50s.
This spread is in good, usable condition, but it is not perfect. There are a few areas of light staining and yellowing, mainly at the top and foot of the spread. At the center fold line at the lower center drop, you can see a line of faint yellow (I increased the saturation to make it more apparent), and there is one small area of stains visible on the front to the right of the peacock. There are a couple more areas of faint staining visible only from the back. I have not washed or soaked the spread, so I expect that some of this can be ameliorated with proper treatment.
Otherwise, I notices one pin home in the purple flower near the top of the spread, a few breaks in the selvage edges, and just a couple pulls to the tufting that I could only see on the back. No other significant losses to the tufting. Some overall fading to the colored tufting.
